International Genealogical Index

International Genealogical Index

The International Genealogical Index (IGI) is a database of genealogical records, compiled from a variety of sources, and maintained by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The International Genealogical Index was originally created in 1969 and designed to help with LDS Temple work.

The IGI database is created from genealogy information submitted by both LDS (Mormon) researchers (see Mormon Genealogy), non-LDS contributors, and data taken from birth and marriage records which have been microfilmed. There are hundreds of millions of records included in the IGI database -- mostly from the US, Canada, and Europe and living between 1500 and 1900.

There are many duplicated records contained in the International Genealogical Index, so you should check the index very carefully and compare it with similar entries to make sure you select the right information. Cross-checking is made easier because every record submitted contains information about who submitted the data and when it was submitted. The IGI can be searched online through Family Search -- the LDS genealogy reference website.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has made genealogy research increasingly convenient by providing so many resources to members and non-members alike.
