Genealogy Software

Genealogy Software

Genealogy Software is computer software used to store, organize, collect, and visualize genealogical information. Genealogy software will often generate family trees based on the data entered.

Most genealogy software will gather the following data:

  • Name, birthdate, birthplace, mother, father, gender
  • Marriages: Names, date, place, date of divorce (if applicable)
  • Deaths: Name, date, place, widow/er

Most genealogy software programs allow users to include source materials for verification purchases. Some software also will let you include biographical information such as occupation, cause of death or other information in notes.

There are many genealogy software programs available -- and each offers different features. Some software is geared toward specific religions. Others will focus on certain geographical regions. Some genealogy software will allow you to import photographs or create family trees. Research the software you want to purchase to make sure it has all of the features you want.

Currently there is a desire to incorporate genealogical DNA test results into a specific field. Right now, DNA information may be added into the "Notes" section of most genealogy software programs.

Most genealogy software will let you export your genealogical records into GEDCOM format which you can then share with other people who use different software programs.
