Getting Started with Genealogy Research
It may feel like you're trying to eat an elephant when you think about getting started with genealogy. But it can be manageable and once you get started, you may never want to quit.
Here are a few suggestions to help you get started.
- Compile information you already have -- start with yourself, your parents and grandparents
- Find family records such as letters, family bibles, journals / diaries, scrapbooks, photos, etc.
- Talk to family members and friends of the family
- Look to local sources for birth certificates, death records, marriage licenses, deeds and wills
- Learn about what genealogy resources are available to you: online, books, articles, workshops, conferences, genealogy societies, family history centers, genealogy websites
There are thousands of genealogy research resources available. Some are free and some available for a small charge. You can consult Census records, use online resources such as
Ancestry.com, find information through FamilySearch, or find a local genealogical society and see what resources are available in your area.
