GEDCOM

GEDCOM

A GEDCOM file is a way to share genealogy research with other genealogists. GEDCOM stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunication and allows users of different genealogy software programs to share data.

GEDCOM was developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (see Mormon Genealogy) to assist in their genealogical research. Basically a GEDCOM file is a text file which contains genealogical information. This data can then be imported into another software program. There are also many tools which will allow someone to convert a GEDCOM file into HTML pages.

The information included in a GEDCOM file includes a header section, the genealogy records and a trailer section. Records represent people, families, source document information, and other misc. information including notes.
