Family Search

FamilySearch is a family history resource (website) offered free of charge by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Family Search is one of the most popular and important genealogy resource on the Internet.

Family Search resources include: searchable genealogical databases, research assistance and the Family History Library catalog. FamilySearch databases contain over 1 billion names.

Some of the databases offered through FamilySearch include:

  • Ancestral File (AF) -- a database of user-contributed genealogy records -- now replaced by the Pedigree Resource File.
  • Census indexes including the 1880 U.S. Census, 1881 British Isles Census, and 1881 Canadian censuses.
  • The International Genealogical Index (IGI) -- indexes of original genealogy records as well as user-contributed data.
  • Pedigree Resource File -- an index to user-contributed family trees uploaded to the FamilySearch site.
  • U.S. Social Security Death Index -- containing vital statistics for over 70 million deceased individuals.
  • Vital Records Index -- including Denmark, Finland, Mexico, Norway, and Sweden.

The Family Search website offers research assistance of two different types. There is the Research Guidance service which is an online wizard offering detailed genealogy research advice based on the users answers to specific questions. There are also Research Helps which are research guides. The Research Helps can be downloaded or read online. There are hundreds of genealogical research guides available.

The Family History Library catalog is also available through Family Search. The physical Family History Library is in Salt Lake City, Utah and contains genealogy records for over 110 countries. There are over 2.4 millions microfilm rolls; 742,000 microfiche; 310,000 books and serials; and 4,500 periodicals.

There are over 4,000 Family History Centers worldwide offered by the LDS Church (see Mormon Genealogy). Individuals can order microfilm and microfiche records at the Family History Centers and view them in one of the branches around the world.

Family history enthusiasts and genealogists all have free access to the Family History Library, FamilySearch and the genealogy resources provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and do not need to be a member of the Church to use the facilities.
