Census

Census

A census contains information about members in the population and can be extremely helpful when conducting genealogy research. Census' have been conducted for hundreds of years and data gleaned from a census may help determine where ancestors lived, what type of occupation they may have had and other important information.

Census data is also commonly used in business marketing, research and other purposes. But for genealogy a good census database can be valuable. census records are not available for the public until 72 years after the census was conducted, but you can find infomation such as: age, place of birth, occupation, spouse name, children, immigration information and more.

Once you've begun your research, if you get stuck you might consider checking the census to find new leads. You can find copies of the census forms from 1790-1930 through the U.S. National Archives and other Federal libraries in the U.S. You can also get census information from genealogy companies such as Ancestry.com and World Vital Records.

Genealogy research can be satisfying and using the Census might be your best bet in finding your ancestors.
